Why does my landing page convert well in testing but poorly when I scale up ad spend?

You've changed your audience, not your page
When you scale ad spend, you usually expand targeting—reaching more keywords, geographic areas, or audience types. Your landing page was optimized for your original, narrower audience. The new audience might need different messaging. Test audience-specific variations of your page.
Your page has a technical bottleneck
If page load time increases under higher traffic, conversions drop. Your hosting might not handle the volume. Check page speed metrics when traffic scales. Slow pages lose conversions regardless of copy quality.
Bid increases attract lower-quality traffic
When you increase PPC budgets to reach more impressions, you typically also increase bids. Higher bids might trigger lower ad positions or less relevant keyword matches, bringing less-intent traffic. This audience has a different conversion baseline. Your page isn't broken; the traffic quality shifted.
You haven't given it enough time
Small audiences can skew results. A test with 50 conversions can have high variance. When you scale, sample sizes grow and variance smooths out, sometimes revealing the real (lower) performance of your page.
The fix
Separate variables. Keep your page constant while testing one audience expansion at a time. Compare conversion rates between the original audience and new audience with the same page to diagnose the actual problem.
